To address this need, Ha/f partnered with Royal Architectural Institute of Canada and National Research Council of Canada to develop and deliver a one-year program of hands-on, case study-based Whole Building Life Cycle Assessment curriculum. Ten one-day sessions, held across the country, introduced over 1,500 architects, landscape architects, engineers, and procurement professionals to fundamentals of embodied carbon and assessment. Participants were introduced to the definitions, methods, targets, and standards associated with LCA as well as having the opportunity to practice with software tools to implement into practice.
Key Outcomes
- Delivered ten full-day sessions across Canada, training over 1,500 architects, landscape architects, engineers, and procurement professionals.
- Participants gained foundational knowledge of embodied carbon, life cycle assessment methods, and current targets and standards, strengthening professional competencies.
- Ongoing access to the training modules are available online through the continuing education service of the RAIC
Key Recommendations
- Different disciplines (designers, engineers, procurement specialists) engaged with the material in unique ways, underscoring the need for adaptable content delivery.
- A one-year program created critical awareness, but participants expressed interest in ongoing training, peer networks, and advanced modules to deepen expertise.
